Playa Dominicus

Playa Dominicus

Dominicus Beach is located in the south, in La Romana, an hour from Punta Cana. The sea is turquoise and calm, the sand is creamy-colored, and there’s also a nearby coral reef for snorkeling and diving.

Our tip: Dominicus Beach is located on the edge of Cotubanamá National Park, with the Padre Nuestro ecological and archaeological trail, springs, and important examples of pre-Columbian art.

Playa de Arena Gorda

Arena Gorda is located near the island’s best resorts, next to Playa Bávaro.

Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and a wide, crystalline coastline, this beach is the ideal place for those seeking a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The atmosphere is relaxed and slightly bohemian, with traditional Dominican huts, beach bars, and small craft stalls. Macao’s restaurants are known for their best Dominican seafood dishes and freshly caught lobster.

Due to its constant waves and wind, Playa Macao is one of Punta Cana’s best beaches for surfers year-round.

The beach is nestled in a dune landscape, and you can enjoy guided buggy tours along the surrounding trails.

Playa Esmeralda

Playa Esmeralda is a pristine stretch of coastline approximately ten kilometers long, located in Miches, whose only luxury lies in its clear, warm waters and a strip of white sand bordered by a zone of tropical forest.

As this is a natural, undeveloped beach, there are no bars, restaurants, or tourist facilities.

Therefore, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable shoes, and something to snack on if you plan to spend the day here.

A note on algae

Especially during the summer season, Punta Cana’s beaches are affected by the seaweed known as “sargassum.”

It’s not harmful to health, but it releases a foul odor when it decomposes and can also inhibit beach and swimming enjoyment.

Many hotels clean the adjacent beaches daily or have barriers in the sea to prevent excessive seaweed from reaching them. The best time to avoid sargassum is from November to February, which coincides with Punta Cana’s peak season.

Most affected beaches by sargassum in Punta Cana

Depending on their location on the Atlantic or Caribbean coast, some beaches are more or less affected by sargassum.

If you’re in Punta Cana during “high sargassum season,” you’d better avoid these areas: Arena Gorda, Playa Bávaro and Cap Cana. They are by far the areas most affected by sargassum.

Sargassum-free beaches in Punta Cana

There are beaches in Punta Cana that are free from sargassum due to their geographical location: Playa Macao, Uvero Alto, Playa Esmeralda and Bayahibe.
